yeehaw! ride 'em cowboy!

howdy!

well still having a great time travelling. im in jaisalmer, rajasthan at the moment and its a beautiful place, if a bit touristy! the fort looks just like a huge sandcastle looking over the rest of jaisalmer and out hotel has a great view of it from the rooftop restaurant. yesterday afternoon we set off to go on a camel safari! i was dead excited and was even offered a turban to wear! seeing as i wasnt going to be a party pooper i took up the oportunity straight away and donned a bright orange one! we stopped off at a few places on the way in the jeep and had a cup of chai in the middle of nowhere at a little shack before clambering aboard our camels! thankfully i didnt fall off, but it wasnt easy staying on while the camel stood up and sat down! the ride wasnt the smoothest ive been on but i think it might have been more comfortable than our bus ride from ahmedabad to jaisalmer that morning!! we rode the camels (mine was called michael jackson by the way! ace!) for about 2hours, the last hour i had ali, our guide, riding behind me because he decided it would be fun to get the camels to run! fun wasnt the first thing that came into my mind, 'ouch' was, but once you got over the bruised thighs it it was fun! i was very glad of the turban too cos it helped to keep the sand out of my nose and mouth! so it wasnt just a fashion accessory!! unfortunately we didnt see the sunset as the sun went behind loads of cloud about 10min before it was supposed to happen but never mind it was ace anyway!

today weve just been pottering around buying odds and ends. becca seems to have overtaken me on the buying side of things! its a complete role reversal, infact shes bought so much shes had to go to the post office now to send 2 parcels home cos the stuff wont fit in her backpack!!

patan was really good too. the salvi family (who produce ikat weaves were) so friendly and helpful. we were there for ages as they explained the technique and processes involved. we were even invited into their sitting room to watch a film that had been made on them in 1970! i got lots of photos and stuff for my dissertation and they want me to send them a copy when its finished! after that we visited another family that specialised in another type of weaving, mashru. that was really cool too and we bought some lovely samples. i couldnt afford any ikat samples unfortunately cos the cheapest sari was Rs90,000 and they only made to order! doh!

our travels seem to have been going well without major probelms although i did get my indian mobile stolen. grr! i was in mcdonalds (that'll learn me!) in ahmedabad, left my phone with becca who was reading her book and when i came back from the loo it had gone. someone had grabbed it from right under her nose. cheeky so and sos, (i did say more than that but its not really suitable to type on my blog!). i managed to get a new one today though so its not too bad, at least it was just my phone not my passport or money!

tomorrow we move onto jodhpur and carry on travelling across rajasthan until we get to jaipur. who knows what adventures await becca and i?! just as long as i can get out of the sand as soon as possible! grr! its everywhere! hehe.
