As well as planting the poppies I was lucky enough to snap one up to keep at home once the display was dismantled. I'm too scared to put this outside in case it gets knocked over & damaged so it sits pride of place on our display cabinet in the dining room. What a great piece of history. Ttfn x

Following on from yesterday's post (see HERE ) I headed back to the Tower of London on Remembrance Sunday to hear the Roll of Honor.   I knew it would be popular so I got there over an hour before it was due to start & I managed to bag myself the perfect spot opposite the mound. Last September I was lucky enough to get the chance to take part in the "Blood Swept Lands & Seas of Red" at the Tower of London.... Those of you who are regular readers will know I love helping out the Royal British Legion & this was a chance to be part of something awesome! "Blood Swept Lands & Seas of Red" was to mark the centenary of the outbreak of WW1, in total there were 888,246 ceramic poppies (1 to represent every British / Colonial serviceman killed) & the last one was planted on Remembrance Day. The aim was to plant 5000 poppies to keep on track for the 11th November but someone ended up opening an extra palette & we planted 6000 instead! Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red The first official day is tomorrow (5th August) to represent the first full day of Britain's involvement in the war. Wow I had a feeling Friday would never arrive! I've spent most if the week thinking its Friday only to realise I had to wait another day, or two (or three!). It's not that we're doing anything mega exciting this weekend I just want my bed so badly! I think it's my inner hedgehog telling me to start hibernating or something. I'm so tired I've even set an alarm on my phone to go off every night from Sunday - Thursday at 10:30pm so I make myself drag my backside to bed instead if staying up watching Geordie/Jersey Shore! Yoink! On another note I've been really pleased to see how many people have been wearing poppies this year. I did my part a few weeks ago collecting for the Royal British Legion in Kings Cross. I don't think I did as well as previous years seeing as it was a cold, wet, Monday evening but every little helps! 2011 seems to have been a pretty good year for the Royal British Legion. It's been lovely to see so many people wearing poppies around London than previous years. Friday we had our 2min silence at 11am & it gave me time to think about Buck. I can't believe it's a year since he passed away already (I posted more about him here last year). This weekend was fairly busy going back & forth between mum&dad's & Lufbra, (more on that later, I'm still ploughing through the photos!) but Adam & I still made time to head back to the cenotaph in Barwell for Sunday's service outside. I got to say hi to Gordon (another guy who fought in WW2 & who's always in my mind when I collect Poppy money) & i did my bit collecting more money during the service. This weekend has been one of those great ones that happen once in a blue moon – it seems to have lasted forever & I feel really refreshed for the week ahead. It's not that I just sat on my bum being a lazy slob, I've actually done quite a lot. Saturday morning I collected for the Poppy Appeal at Euston for 3hrs. For once I was quite impressed at the amount of people already wearing poppies & also how many bought from me. I picked the same spot I had last time so I caught the people from both the tube & the mainline trains. I had a pretty steady stream of people coming up to me until someone else decided to collect at the top of the escalator that I was at the bottom of. By this point I only had about half hour left so went for a wander around the ticket hall. Once I'd done my good deed I headed back home, had a spot of lunch & fell asleep till about 5pm. As a thank you for collecting with the Poppy Appeal over the last couple of years I was invited along with about 30 other people to a guided tour of the Tower of London last Monday. We all met at the Westgate that had a brilliant view of Tower Bridge & I managed to time it right with a red double decker bus going over it - a typical touristy shot if there ever was one! At about 7:15 we were met by a Beefeater who took us round telling us all the gruesome tales from the past that had gone on there. Who'd been beheaded cos of what & when & other stories that may or may not have been true. It's quite a spooky place if you believe everything they tell you! It was brilliant going back there cos I've not been since I was about 7 & I actually remembered & understood more this time! It's that time of year again & i'm really happy to say that i've seen so many more people wearing poppies than previous years. I did my poppy collecting at euston station last sunday & i was pretty busy & even had people coming up to me asking all about it. On one hand there are loads of people already wearing them, on the other, people were saying i was the 1st poppy person they'd seen! I'm on my 4th poppy so far this year! I bought my 2nd one cos i'd left the house with a different coat on & felt guilty not wearing one then needed the 3rd & 4th cos the others fell apart! This year the poppy means that bit more to me cos our very close family friend buck passed away on the 12th oct. He was from texas & a paratrooper in the 82nd airbourne division during world war 2. He made the jump on d-day & was awarded the purple heart after suffering a gunshot wound to the head while pulling one of his fellow soldiers to safety. He came over ...

Well its that time of year again when i report back & say how many poppies Ive had to buy & replace. Well amazingly enough the answer is none! Wonders will never cease! The same cant be said for the rest of london tho......i decided to do my bit this year & went to collect money for the poppy people at heathrow airport last saturday & the most common thing that was said to me.....'this is my 2nd, 3rd, 4th poppy this year i just keep losing them!' ha so im not alone! I did quite well though & managed to sell all but 10 of my poppies in the box & ill find out how much i raised later on. I was on my own for most of the time until a man dressed in his raf jacket & was about 70 showed up with his poppies & wife in tow. He saw me & said 'ah a volunteer thats what i like to see' so i thought id finally have a nice friendly man to chat to until, plonk, hed set up his little table right infront of me so i was completely blocked & couldnt...

oh to be a kid again. i was sitting behind a group of school boys this morning on the bus and they were all chatting about money - one guy had 10p that he wasn't giving to ANYONE and on the other extreme one of his mates was said to be 'loaded' seeing as he had £4! now if we go by this rule then i might be classed as a millionnaire seeing as i have the treasured value of £8.60 in my purse. i wish shops could appreciate this new value of money - if they did, im sure i could be owning a penthouse on regent street and a lovely rx8! i think we should listen to kids more and take on their ways of thinking! i want to be rich dammit!! btw, still on the subject of money i was quite impressed that my poppy total this year only reached £3! i managed to keep the same poppy for the full amount of time tho i did find myself buying another one from 2 really old men at waterloo station cos i felt sorry for them and the other was for adam cos we were going to a rememberance sunday ...

Well ive got my 1st poppy of 2007. Lets see how long this one lasts. I always buy them early so i can wear it for a while but the plan usually backfires, cos the little poppy that i thought id donate a pound to get, ends up costing about a tenner cos the thing falls off too often! I had heard that theyd brought out a sticky poppy so you dont need the pin & so in theory doesnt fall off, but then it doesnt feel as traditional as when you either look down & see just a pin where your poppy was or you stab yourself on the pin! Cant win really! :-P X x x

I was quite impressed with this bag! I got to work on friday &ealised i didnt have a bag to go out with so i got a magazine that had one free. I then realised it was really cheap & ming (!) so i searched through my bag & found some random things in there to sew onto it & the photo above is what i managed to do on the train to lufbra! I was quite proud of it! :-) One thing Ive noticed this year is the lack of poppies on peoples coats. I think thats really sad that people arent buying them & wearing them very much now. Ive always worn one & i will usually buy about 3 a year cos ill buy the first one so early thatll ill loose it & the same with the next one! Hopeless! At least Ive made up for 2 other people that didnt buy one this year! Xxx
